Central PTSA Speaker Event at Madrona Elementary

Last Tuesday, March 5, Stevens helped co-sponsor a Central PTSA speaker event at Madrona Elementary which featured guest speaker Sharon H. Chang who spoke on the topic of Raising Mixed Kids:  Multiracial Identity & Development.  The event was well-attended and informative for parents who wanted to learn how to talk to their mixed-race kids about race, identity, and privilege.  Information resources were handed out to the audience. If you would like to get a copy of the resource information, you can contact info@stevenspta.org and learn more about Ms. Chang’s work at www.sharonhchang.com.

    Stevens School Tour, April 18

Stevens will be hosting the last school tour of the year on Thursday, April 18 - the tour will start at 9:30am near the Main Office.  Prospective parents can RSVP for any of these tours at: https://stevenses.seattleschools.org/about/school_tours

If interested in volunteering for the tour, please contact the PTA Outreach team at outreach@stevenspta.org.

    Open PTA Board Positions

The PTA Board is still looking to fill multiple open positions this year -- Treasurer, Legislative Chair, and Special Education Liaison -- and identify a Tutu’s team or leader for next year!

Out of the open PTA Board positions, the Treasurer role is the most crucial, time-sensitive, and also one of the most fulfilling positions.  In order for a PTA to be in good standing, we are legally required to have a Treasurer on our PTA board. We can’t have a PTA without a Treasurer!

The Co-Treasurer will share accounting responsibilities with our Treasurer Extraordinaire, Megan Boyce-Jacobs.  If you love crunching numbers, managing budgets and working with Quickbooks, consider being a PTA Co-Treasurer.  We are looking for 2 people to start training with Megan this year, with the role officially starting July 1. If interested, please email treasurer@stevenspta.org.

Do you have passion for education advocacy? Perhaps Legislative Chair is the role for you.  Do you have an interest in serving as a voice for all our Special Education families at Stevens?  Volunteer to be our Special Education Liaison.  All of these positions are one or two-year terms, and most are mentored by a current Board Co-Chair, providing the time and opportunity to learn.  Please consider sharing your talents by joining the PTA Board and supporting all kids at Stevens! If interested, please email info@stevenspta.org.

Mathnificent Night at Stevens was a huge SUCCESS!  It was fantastic to see so many families show up to play math games and interact with each other.  Special thanks to Mrs. Snowden and Ms. Andrews for coordinating the entire event! We hope to do more of these kind of fun family events at Stevens!

We also hosted a Special Food Drive for families affected by the government shutdown.  Thanks to all the families who donated to help with this special endeavor.  Tutu’s Pantry is still in need of food donations. See the section on Tutu’s Pantry for more specific ways you can help.

Our Stevens PTA Racial Equity Team is looking to get more parents involved in the racial equity discussion at Stevens and have more diverse voices on the team.  The team is seeking more feedback and input from the community on this very important topic. If you have any ideas or would like to help shape the discussion, please contact info@stevenspta.org.

    Stevens School Tours

Remember when your little one was about to start Kindergarten?  You went on a Stevens tour and it helped you realize that Stevens was the right fit for your child and family.  Here’s an opportunity to pay it forward and help new prospective parents learn more about Stevens.

Stevens will be hosting school tours on January 11 (Friday), January 24 (Thursday) and April 18 (Thursday) -- all tours start at 9:30am near the Main Office.  Prospective parents can RSVP for any of these tours at: https://stevenses.seattleschools.org/about/school_tours

Tour volunteers are not expected to know and answer everything about the school, curriculum, staff, and practices.  You are merely an ambassador, sharing your personal experiences about Stevens. All that is needed is a positive attitude and a willingness to share and inform new parents about our wonderful Stevens community.

Please contact the PTA Outreach team at outreach@stevenspta.org if you are interested.

The first Friday of every month is an opportunity for parents to come to school right at the start of day and talk to Dr. Fitch and at least one of the PTA presidents in a smaller environment about topics of interest. For the first few chats, we’ve touched on topics such as advanced learning opportunities, expanding after-school enrichment classes, and how we can be a more inclusive community.  We don’t have an agenda other than talking about what’s on your mind. We meet from 8:00 - 9:00 am in the conference room in the main office right after drop-off. We hope you can join us!

    Open PTA Board Positions

The PTA Board currently has three open positions -- Treasurer, Legislative Chair, and Special Education Liaison.

The co-Treasurer will share accounting responsibilities with our Treasurer Extraordinaire, Megan Boyce-Jacobs.  If you love crunching numbers, managing budgets and working with Quickbooks, consider being a PTA Co-Treasurer.  We are looking for someone to start in January who can be mentored by Megan before her family moves on to middle school.  If interested, email treasurer@stevenspta.org.

    Stevens Coat Drive

Cold weather is here!  Help ensure that ALL our kids have warm coats for the winter!  Donate your child’s clean, gently used winter coat and place it on the rack next to Tutu's Pantry near the main entrance of the school.  Stop by and pick up a coat, or drop off coats you no longer need. All kid sizes are welcome! It would be great to get a collection of coats by December 14 to distribute before the break.

Lost-and-found coats should be placed on the rack inside the cafeteria, not on the coat-drive rack near the main entrance.  Please remember to write names in your children’s coats that you do not want to end up on the coat-drive rack or on the lost-and-found rack in the cafeteria!

Questions? Contact Jules D'Amour at jj.damour@yahoo.com. Thanks for recycling, and stay warm!

    UPCOMING EVENTS

Tree Sale and Pancake Breakfast Volunteers Needed!

We are still looking for merry volunteers to help out with these events.  Shifts are 2 hours in length - we could use the most help with the following:

    • Tree Sale Helpers: Friday, 5-7pm and 7-9pm; Saturday, 9-11am, 11-1pm, 1-3pm
    • Pancake Prep and Flip: Saturday, 9-11am
    • Breakfast Cleanup: Saturday, 11-1pm

The more the merrier!!  Please sign-up online or email treesale@stevenspta.org.

Holiday Food Drive, through December 6

**This is the last week of the Holiday Food Drive, and the final day to have donations counted for your classroom is Thursday, December 6th. **

Our pantry is filling up with lots of great food! Last week, we had a day where volunteers counted and helped restock 4 FULL shopping carts full of food. Thank you Stevens!! We will use the donated items to create large boxes of food for our Winter Wishes families to use over winter break and to help fill backpacks for the rest of December and into the New Year.

All food donations during the Holiday Food Drive should be placed in the boxes outside of your child's classroom. This is the perfect opportunity to let your kids get involved with choosing food items to give that they know kids will love. Last year was amazing, and we're hoping to beat our record this year!

The two classes (one from K-2 and one from 3-5) who collect the most items will get front row viewing of the tree drop from the delivery truck for the Tree Sale on Friday, December 7!  We will announce the classrooms Friday morning and all other classrooms will be able to watch the drop from their classroom 'lines' near the basketball court.

NOTE: NO expired foods or glass containers. Small individual snacks will be counted as 6 to 1, so they are equivalent to canned and group packaged items.

Winter Wishes, December 7 and 8

***Shop the Winter Wishes Crafts Table and Tutu’s Pantry Bake Sale during the Holiday Tree Sale for lovingly handcrafted gifts and goodies made by teachers, parents, alumni and Stevens students! All proceeds go directly to stock the shelves of our very own Tutu’s Pantry.  Drop by the main office to see what we’ll be selling. ***

Have a craft item to donate?  Contact Lori Bugaj at tutuspantry@stevenspta.org by Thursday, December 6.

Calling all bakers! Bake or buy (we won't tell), a dozen treats, drop them off and we'll take care of the rest!  All baking can be dropped off in the PTA room inside the Main Office this Friday, December 7.  Cookies, brownies, holiday baking is all appreciated. Individually wrapped treats are appreciated but not necessary. *Please mark baking that contains nuts or is gluten free.  If you have questions, please email joysourthworth@hotmail.com.

With the timing of Hanukkah this year, we will have sets of candles for sale in the office for $10/box of 45 candles. Just leave your donation with Heather or Jacqueline in the Main Office. All proceeds, just like those for the craft table, will be used for our Winter Wishes program.

And, if making a monetary donation is easier than baking or crafting, we're okay with that, too! You can give your Winter Wishes check or cash to Heather and Jacqueline.  This is the LAST week for us to collect monetary donations for gift cards and food donations for food boxes to help out families in our Stevens community. Checks should be made out to “Stevens PTA”, noting “Winter Wishes” in the memo line. Thank you so much for supporting our Stevens community this holiday season!!

    Annual Fund, 3 Days Left!!

The Annual Fund Drive is coming to a close this Friday, December 7.  Thank you to all the Stevens families who have given.  Thank you also to our neighbors, grandparents, relatives, and friends who have given.  And thanks to our sponsors at Windermere--Deidre Doyle, Joe Nabbefeld and Erik Johnson--for their support.

So far, we have raised a little over $60,000 of our $110,000 goal with a third of our families participating.  If you have not yet made a donation, please turn in your donations and pledges by Friday. If you mail in a check or make a pledge, let us know at fundraising@stevenspta.org so we can count your gift towards our goal.

Your donations make teaching artists, instructional assistants, theater performances, Camp Orkila and other programs a reality for our students.

To make this really fun, Dr. Fitch has agreed to dye his hair a color chosen by the students if we meet our Annual Fund goal!  We will announce the results of our Annual Fund Drive at the Pancake Breakfast and Winter Concert on Saturday, December 8. Thank you for your support!

    PTA Meeting, November 13, 6:30 - 8pm, Stevens Library

Join us for our next PTA meeting on Tuesday, November 13.  We will be discussing how PTA can expand their outreach to all Stevens families and have more diverse voices at our meetings and events and become a more inclusive community.  Childcare and light snacks will be provided.

    Join the PTA Board!

Currently, we have the following open positions on this year’s PTA Board -- Treasurer, Legislative Chair, and Special Education Liaison.  If you love crunching numbers and Quickbooks, consider being a PTA Treasurer. Have passion for education advocacy? Perhaps Legislative Chair is the role for you, OR be a voice for all our Special Education families on the Board.   Each position is a one or two-year term, and most are mentored by a current Board Co-Chair, providing the time and opportunity to learn. Please consider sharing your talents by joining the PTA Board and supporting all kids at Stevens!  If interested, please email info@stevenspta.org.

    Back-to-School Social at Optimism

We had a great turnout at our Back-to-School social at Optimism Brewery on Capitol Hill on Sunday, September 30.  Thank you to all our students and their families for attending. Special thanks to Molly Neitzel from Molly Moon's for donating ice cream and Gay Gilmore & Troy Hakala from Optimism Brewery for hosting the event and donating a portion of the beer proceeds that day!  We raised $1000 for Stevens!

    Fall Social

Thanks to everyone who attended and volunteered at the Fall Social!  What a HOOT! They gym was full of energy with music, carnival games, dancing, and many creative costumes.  Special thanks to Natasha de Plater (the artistic tour-de-force behind all the amazing Halloween decorations) and Caren Ezratty-O’Connor for coordinating this favorite community event; PE Teachers Eric Peters and Susan Goubert, who taught our kids some cool dance routines; Stevens’ custodial staff, James French and Abdullah Ismail; all the parents who volunteered at the event and those of you who helped us clean up at the end; and to everyone who contributed to the potluck.  We were able to donate the extra food to Tutu’s pantry!

    The Stevens Directory

The Stevens Directory is finally complete and went home with students the week of October 22.  Each student should have received one. If you find that you have more than your household(s) requires, please return the extras to the Stevens Main Office so they can be redistributed.  If you find that you need more than what came home, please ask at the Main Office and they can provide you with an extra copy.

Inclusion in the Stevens Directory was dependent on submission of the Green Form that was sent home with the Tea Packet at the beginning of the school year.

    TUTU’S PANTRY CORNER

    Tacos for Tutu’s Fundraiser

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who attended the Pecado Bueno fundraiser last month - the Stevens and Lowell Elementary food programs each received over $1100 from this event.  WOW! And thank you to those who made a donation to Tutu's at the Fall Social. These funds help supplement the food we need to purchase to pack over 25 backpacks every week at Stevens.

    Future Tutu’s Pantry Leadership

Tutu's Pantry is going strong as we work hard to put in place a program that should need little to no fundraising next school year. If feeding children is your passion, please consider making this program yours for 2019 and beyond. We can work it out so that 2 to 3 people can split up the tasks so it is easy to do. If you are interested or want to talk, please contact Lori Bugaj at tutuspantry@stevenspta.org.

    UPCOMING EVENTS

Holiday Food Drive, November 5 - December 6

Your gifts to Tutu’s Pantry have been fantastic this year but we still need donations to help feed our students. What better way to do this than during our Holiday Food Drive Competition which kicked off this week! Grades K-2 and 3-5 will be collecting non-perishable food items in their classrooms now through Thursday, December 6. All items collected will help stock our Tutu's Pantry.

All food donations during the Holiday Food Drive should be placed in the boxes outside of your child's classroom. This is the perfect opportunity to let your kids get involved with choosing food items to give that they know kids will love. Last year was amazing, and we're hoping to beat our record this year!

As the weather gets cooler, we need these items for the pantry:

    - canned entrees (Ravioli, Spaghetti-Os and Chili)

    - single serve snacks (such as granola bars, fruit snacks or pudding cups)

    - boxed Macaroni and Cheese

    - monetary donations - we will do the shopping for you!

And, the two classes (one from K-2 and one from 3-5) who collect the most items will get front row viewing of the tree drop from the delivery truck for the Tree Sale on Friday, December 7!  Let the classroom donation competition begin!!

Please NOTE: NO expired foods or glass containers. Small individual snacks will be counted as 6 to 1, so they are equivalent to canned and group packaged items.

    Winter Wishes, November 6 - December 11

As winter approaches, we want to remind you of our very special Winter Wishes program which helps out families in our Stevens community that need assistance during the holidays, with a gift card (for each child in the family who attends Stevens) and a box of food. The funds for this program come from donations from Stevens families (separate from the Annual Fund) and our Winter Wishes Crafts and Baked Goods tables at the Tree Sale on December 7 and 8.

You can contribute by baking goodies, making crafts or donating money in the Winter Wishes envelopes (soon to decorate the front entry-way to school). Contact Lori Bugaj at tutuspantry@stevenspta.org or 415.999.0818 for more details or to help.

    Annual Fund, November 7 - December 8

The Stevens Annual Fund has officially begun!  From now until December 8, our goal is to raise $110,000 and to have 100% participation.  Annual Fund brochures were mailed out to families end of October.

Every family has a different ability to give and different resources.  If you are in a position to make a bigger contribution to Stevens, give 1-3% of your household income.  If you are on social media, let your network know how they can support your kids’ school by posting a link to our Annual Fund Drive webpage (www.stevenspta.org/annual-fund).  Ask five friends, relatives or neighbors to match your contribution.  Let us know if there is a business that might be interested in sponsoring the Annual Fund.  Share your ideas and contributions to fundraising@stevenspta.org. Thank you!

Stevens Holiday Tree Sale and Pancake & Latke Breakfast, December 7 and 8

Planning and ground work for the Stevens Holiday Tree Sale and Pancake & Latke Breakfast is well under way.  This event is fun and takes a lot of hands. We hope you can help!

First up: FLIERS!  Get your steps and help make these events a huge success. Please sign up for an area to tuck fliers and annual fund brochures invitingly on folks' porches. We can get fliers in your hands by Wednesday 11/7 and you decide when you get them out by Sunday 11/11 (or Monday since there is no school): https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090d4caaa92ca6f58-getthe

Second: Sign up for the actual events!  We need LOTS of folks to turn out to make both of these events happen. The more the merrier: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090d4caaa92ca6f58-2018

Third: If you think you might want to help with the advance work, we could use you.  I am a 5th grade parent and we need folks from other grades to step up for next year or do grocery shopping for pancake ingredients this year! Let us know if you are interested.

Thanks all! These are both awesome events that build community and raise money for Stevens programs.  For more information on the these events visit the event website.

    FROM THE PTA

Thank you to the new members of the Stevens community who joined us for our Welcome Tea on September 11, and to everyone who participated in our first General PTA meeting of the year on September 25.  If you missed it, we hope to see you at another meeting this year. Meetings take place every other month from 6:30 - 8pm in the Stevens Library. We encourage all parents, guardians, and teachers to become PTA members so that your voice can be heard and your vote counted on issues that affect our community, budget decisions, and board positions. Memberships are renewed annually and scholarships are available.

The next PTA meeting is November 13.

    "First Friday Community Chats"

The PTA held its first "Community Chat" with Dr. Fitch and PTA co-presidents in the office conference room the second week of school. We had a small group, just four parents, and shared coffee while exploring a variety of topics. Questions ranged from how to support parents in navigating homework at home in fun and effective ways, to how the school and teachers work to challenge students who are working above their grade level. If you have questions or ideas of your own, please join us for our next chat on October 5, right after drop off, or plan on another first Friday. We look forward to talking with you!

    Open PTA Board Positions

The Tree Sale team is starting to lay the groundwork to have another epic year.  We had a record breaking year this past year and would love to do it again. If you can help in the planning work, join the team!  We need a little web savvy, logistic organizing, and many hands for the actual Tree Sale dates. Contact Nash at: treesale@stevenspta.org.

You can also contact outreach@stevenspta.org to find out about other volunteer opportunities.

    Before you volunteer….

    • Volunteers need to complete the volunteer sign up process before the day they are coming to help. This includes: filling out the SPS volunteer application form online, watching the sexual misconduct prevention video (you will receive an email verification to save) and bringing photo ID to the school for verification.
    • You can apply to volunteer online at:  http://www.seattleschools.org/volunteer
    • If you have any questions, contact Heather Pollard (hrpollard@seattleschools.org) in the Main Office.

Thanks for supporting the Stevens community!
